New York City officials commissioned a study of the impact of garbage disposals in the city’s Department of Sanitation (DOS). The study revealed the potential for disposals to make a positive impact on NYC residential waste management. According to data collected, disposals divert about 3% of total household solid waste. If it is assumed that 38% of the NYC households are equipped with garbage disposals by 2035 and that the average equipped household places 50% of food waste into disposals, the city would save $4 million in solid waste export costs.
